GM Diversity: GM and the LGBT Community

GM supports its lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) employees in many ways and was recently recognized by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation as one of the “Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality.” 

We work to provide an environment that recognizes and embraces the diverse needs of our employees and the LGBT community. That includes an active LGBT employee group, strong relationships with external organizations and community groups, and inclusive health and domestic partner benefits.

GM Earns Top Marks in 2014 Corporate Equality Index

GM has once again received a perfect score of 100 percent on the 2014 Corporate Equality Index (CEI), a national benchmarking survey and report on corporate policies and practices related to LGBT workplace equality, administered by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. GM joins the ranks of 304 major U.S. businesses which also earned top marks this year.

“Achieving a truly diverse workforce is an ongoing process. A corporation must constantly evolve its hiring, training and policies to align its employee base with its customer base,” stated GM Chief Diversity Officer Ken Barrett. “This recognition from HRC is proof of our continued commitment to equality for our LGBT employees and is integral to creating a world-class organization.”

The 2014 CEI rated 934 businesses in the report, which evaluates LGBT-related policies and practices including non-discrimination workplace protections, domestic partner benefits, transgender-inclusive health care benefits, competency programs, and public engagement with the LGBT community. GM’s efforts in satisfying all of the CEI’s criteria resulting in a 100 percent ranking and the designation as a Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality. Volt Ad Impresses GLAAD

Chevrolet won a GLAAD Amplifier Award for their "I'm Electric" Volt ad (right) at the award ceremony in New York. The recognition, awarded by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), recognizes the best in LGBT-inclusive advertising, marketing and public relations.

The ad originally appeared in the local Detroit LGBT newspaper, Between the Lines, in June 2012 and quickly spread around the world via social media channels. An analysis of its reach estimates that more than 11 million people have seen the ad.

On hand to receive the award were Bill Woodard and Rachel Marshall, the creative minds behind the ad from Goodby, Silverstein & Partners in Detroit. They were joined on stage by Matt Scarlett, the National Advertising Manager for the Volt, and Joe LaMuraglia, LGBT Communications Manager. Josh Kilmer-Purcell and his partner Brent Ridge, also known as the Fabulous Beekman Boys, were the celebrities delivering the award on stage at New York's XL night club.

GM on "It Gets Better"

The It Gets Better Project (TM), part of The Trevor Project, was created to inspire hope for young people of the LGBT community facing harassment.  Since its launch in 2010, it has turned into a worldwide movement, inspiring more than 25,000 user-created videos that have been widely viewed.

The  Trevor Project was formed in an effort to end suicide among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth by providing life-saving and life-affirming resources including its nationwide, 24/7 crisis intervention lifeline, and digital community and advocacy/educational programs that create a safe, supportive and positive environment for everyone.

In this video, members of our LGBT community share their own personal stories in response to “The Trevor Project.” Their moving stories will hopefully remind young adults that is DOES get better.

Buick and the Gay Men’s Chorus

Founded in 1981, The Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, D.C., has more than 270 members who perform five concerts annually and participate in a host of community events. Its mission is to delight audiences and champion gay equality with robust artistry, fun and surprise.

Partnering with Buick, the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, D.C., invited members of the community to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in June 2011 and showcased the Buick Enclave and Buick LaCrosse. GM’s Adam Bernard was on hand to speak with the attendees during the cocktail reception, sharing insight and background on GM PLUS. A mobile photo studio captured guests interacting with the vehicles and provided customized souvenir snapshots at the end of the night.
